Dual diagnosis also known as co-occurring disorder occurs when someone have both mental disorder and alcohol or drug problem. Both illnesses may affect an individual physically, psychologically, spiritually, and socially. Each illness has different effects in one’s body function. Since there are two illnesses involve in such condition, both illnesses interact with one another. To recover fully with these conditions, a person needs treatment for both problems. It should be treated simultaneously.
There are treatments that can stop the disorder. At drug rehab center, there are treatments programs that can help individual having this condition to totally disappear. An individual can take detoxification as its treatment to fully removed toxins caused by alcohol and substances. Ideally, detoxification should take place under medical supervision. Such process depends on what kind of substance abused and for how long. An individual is in dual recovery when they are actively following treatment program that focuses on their recovery needs for both chemical dependency and psychiatric illness.
